Nearly 30 animals killed in North Las Vegas fire

A northeast valley fire left more than two dozen dogs dead Sunday evening, North Las Vegas Fire Department officials reported.

Firefighters responded to the one-story house, in the 2600 block of Stanley Avenue near Eastern and Owens avenues, just before 8 p.m.

Upon arrival, the crews noticed a number of dogs running around in front of the house, fire department Capt. Cedric Williams said. Once they got into the house, they found upwards of 100 animals.

They were able to contain the fire quickly, but the house sustained heavy smoke damage. Nearly 30 dogs were confirmed dead as of 10 p.m., Williams said.

North Las Vegas and City of Las Vegas animal control crews were at the scene, helping transport the dead animals and get help for the injured ones.

Williams said the investigation would continue through the night. It was unsure as of 10 p.m. if charges would be filed against the home’s occupants.
