North Las Vegas renames street to honor former Rep. Shelley Berkley

A stretch of Deer Springs Way will be renamed in honor of former Rep. Shelley Berkley, who served seven terms in Congress.

Shelley Berkley Way will run along the southern border of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, under a proposal unanimously approved Wednesday night by the North Las Vegas City Council. A street sign will soon be installed.

The council first announced the plan in July, when a blue street sign and an honorary key was presented to Berkley, the second woman from Nevada elected to Congress. From 1999 to 2013, she represented a district that encompassed North Las Vegas, part of Las Vegas and the Strip.

Separately, the City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a $30,000 raise for City Manager Qiong Liu, who was appointed in November 2014. Liu will now earn $220,000 annually, plus more than $146,000 in benefits.
