Pedestrian killed by suspected hit-and-run impaired driver

Updated May 23, 2023 - 8:50 pm

A man was jailed on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of a crash after police say he fatally struck a pedestrian with his car and drove away.

Josue Ghione, 27, was driving a 2020 Honda Civic around 9:30 p.m. Sunday near East Sahara Avenue and South Maryland Parkway, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said video from the scene and witness statements indicate Ghione hit a man who was walking outside a marked crosswalk. The driver then left the scene.

According to the arrest report, witnesses told police that Ghione stopped and got out of the car after hitting the man, then got back into the car and drove away after looking at the victim.

The pedestrian was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he died.

Police said Ghione was found later at his home and showed signs of impairment.

Police said Ghione initially told officers “I was expecting this,” when they met him at his home, and he said he knew he hit something while driving but told officers that he wasn’t really sure what it was that he hit.

According to the arrest report, Ghione denied drinking before driving and said that he had a drink after getting home. Police said the passenger riding with Ghione told them he did not have a drink after arriving home.

Ghione faces charges of reckless driving resulting in death, duty to stop at the scene of a crash involving death and DUI resulting in death. He is due back in court Wednesday.
