Separate shootings Tuesday night leave woman, man dead

Las Vegas police are investigating a shooting that left a woman dead in a northwest valley street Tuesday night.

Patrol officers were called to a residential area in the 5800 block of Delabarre Place, near North Jones Boulevard and West Smoke Ranch Road, at 11:36 p.m.

Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s homicide unit said several people in the area reported hearing gunshots and saw the woman in the street.

A dark-colored SUV was seen speeding away from the area about the same time the shots were heard, police said.

Additional details about suspects or the motive behind the shooting were unknown as of Tuesday morning. The woman’s identity will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office after her family has been notified.

Her death marks the 34th homicide investigated by Las Vegas police this year — and one of two on Tuesday night.

“We’ve been really busy this year,” said Lt. Dan McGrath, who oversees the Metropolitan Police Department’s homicide unit. “A lot of violence. A lot of gun violence.”

Just a few hours earlier, a man was gunned down in a northwest valley strip mall.

That shooting followed a fight in front of a small smoke shop on the southwest corner of Rancho Drive and Cheyenne Avenue just before 9 p.m.

McGrath said the man who died was shot once just in front of the smoke shop, and accounts from at least 10 witnesses suggest the man then tried to run away before he was shot again. The unarmed man died in the parking lot.

Andy Taylor, 53, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of murder with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and possession of a stolen firearm, police said.
