Student who died after hanging himself at school identified

The high school student who was found dead from an apparent suicide on Thursday at East Career and Technical Academy has been identified.

Orlando Cano, 18, died after hanging himself inside the school, the Clark County coroner’s office said.

His body was found early Thursday morning before school was in session.

The district’s crisis response team was at the campus, on Vegas Valley Drive near Hollywood Boulevard, on Thursday and Friday, spokeswoman Amanda Fulkerson said. But the principal didn’t send a letter home to parents – as is usually done following a tragedy – and the death at school wasn’t made public until late Monday.

“This tragedy serves as a reminder for our entire community to watch for signs of distress in our young people,” Fulkerson said.

Counseling was offered to both students and staff.
