Think pink for National Breast Cancer Awareness month

Numerous activities and tie-ins are planned in observance of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is aimed at raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and treatment.

Among the variety of activities and events scheduled are:

Saturday

The Review-Journal’s annual Pink Paper Day will feature an event from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Downtown Summerlin, Sahara Avenue and 215 Beltway. The event will feature free food, entertainment and guest appearances. Proceeds from sales of the RJ will benefit the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate and the American Cancer Society (reviewjournal.com/pink0).

The sixth annual Rose Regatta Dragon Boat Race and Festival, to support Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican and the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Centers of Excellence breast health services, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Lake Las Vegas. Dragon boat teams will compete in races, and the event will include a Flowers on the Water ceremony, a Painted Paddles Gallery, the Light the Way lantern tribute, entertainment and activities (roseregatta.kintera.org).

UNLV Volleyball will have “Block Out Cancer Night” at their game versus the University of New Mexico at 6 p.m. at Cox Pavilion, Tropicana Avenue and Swenson Street. Tickets are $5-$8 (702-739-3267).

Oct. 12

UNLV Women’s Pink Soccer Game featuring UNLV vs. San Diego State will be at 1 p.m. at UNLV’s Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field. Attendees who wear pink will receive half price on the regular price ticket of $8 (702-739-3267).

ULTA Beauty stores will host Salon Cut-A-Thons to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For a minimum donation of $10, participants will receive a wash and cut. Locations include: 2186 N. Rainbow Blvd. (702-631-3668), 9857 S. Eastern Ave. (702-270-2410), 7265 Arroyo Crossing Parkway (702-263-0315), and 543 N. Stephanie St., Henderson. (702-451-6090). Through October, ULTA will also have its annual Donate with a Kiss campaign, with paper kisses decorating stores across the country. Each kiss decal represents a $1 donation to BCRF.

Oct. 14

“Gallery Night: An Evening of Pink,” an art auction featuring an evening of pink art, design and furniture, will be presented at 5:30 p.m. at Artistic Lifestyles, 2758 S. Highland Drive, Suite B. Tickets are $25 in advance or at the door, and proceeds will benefit the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate (unlvtickets.com; facebook.com/lasvegasgallerynight).

Oct. 17

The UNLV Men’s Pink Soccer Game featuring UNLV vs. Air Force will be at 7 p.m. at UNLV’s Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field. Attendees who wear pink will receive half price on the regular price ticket of $8.

Oct. 18

Smiles for Survivors Foundation will have its annual Blow Out Breast Cancer event at Square Colour Salon + Spa, 1225 S. Fort Apache Road. The event will feature blowouts and beauty treatments, Champagne and small bites at 2 p.m., and a party with cocktails, food, silent auction and entertainment at 7 p.m. In advance, tickets are $75 for the party and blowout or $50 for the party only. “Menopause The Musical” at Luxor will host a discount night to benefit the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $46.20 and $8 will be donated to the affiliate. For tickets, call 702-238-4187.

Oct. 22

The Southern Highlands Golf Club, 1 Robert Trent Jones Lane, will host the annual Pink Tee ladies only golf and social event, to benefit local breast cancer organizations. The event is open to golfers and nongolfers of all skill levels. Tickets are $250 for golf, contests, dinner and shopping, and includes caddies. Tickets for dinner and shopping only are $150. The event will also feature Box for Locks raffle with proceeds going towards buying wigs for those in need. The deadline for reservations is Oct. 17 (702-361-6640).

Oct. 26

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk will be at Red Rock Resort, 11011 W. Charleston Blvd. Registration starts at 7 a.m. with the walk at 7:30 a.m. (strideslasvegas.com).

King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery, 2697 E. Eldorado Lane, will host a concert at 3 p.m., featuring female cantors and vocalists from the Southern Nevada Jewish community. Tickets are $18-$36, couches for four are available for a donation of $250. Advance reservations are suggested, and proceeds will benefit the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate. Nov. 1

The UNLV Pink Football Game vs. the University of New Mexico will be presented at 2:30 p.m. at Sam Boyd Stadium, 7000 E. Russell Road. Tickets are $7-$17 in advance, $10-$20 day of (702-739-3267; unlvtickets.com).

Other events

Station Casinos properties will have its Project Pink campaign through October to support the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate and American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” campaign. Activities will include pink-themed blackjack and poker tables, pink-themed menu items, including pink flour tortillas, sopapillas and chips, at all Mexican restaurants, pink-themed pastries at Grand Cafe locations, Cafe Fiesta and the Red Rock Resort gift shop. On Oct. 18-19, “21 for the Cure” and “Poker Goes Pink” will be held at designated “pink” tables at Station Casinos properties that offer poker and blackjack tables with a portion of the rake and winnings benefiting local charities. Bingo session pink packs will be available for $4 every Sunday in October at participating properties. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Revolver Saloon and Dance Hall at Santa Fe Station will donate proceeds from the $5 cover after 10 p.m. to benefit the nonprofits (sclv.com).

Through October, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf locations will offer pink ribbon products, including acrylic pink mugs and hot mugs, Breakfast Blend dark roast coffee and Wild Cherry Tea Tin flavored black tea, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.

Through October, Nothing Bundt Cakes, 9711 S. Eastern Ave. (877-238-6223) and 8320 W. Sahara Ave. (702-871-6301), will donate 20 percent of each pink cake sold to the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate.

Pink Nails, 8414 Farm Road, will be painting pink ribbons on nails and doing glitter ribbon tattoos with proceeds going to the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate throughout October (702-384-8889; ilovepinknails.com).

The Nail Affair, 6040 Badura Ave., will donate 10 percent for every manicure and pedicure to the Komen Southern Nevada affiliate through October (702-997-6664).

Hungry Howie’s Pizza locations will have its annual “Love, Hope & Pizza” campaign during October with a portion of proceeds from every pizza sold going to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation (hungryhowies.com).

Re:lax spa at Aliante Casino, 7300 N. Aliante Parkway, North Las Vegas, will donate 10 percentof each sale of pink body products and themed treatments to Komen Southern Nevada Affiliate (702-692-7378).

Throughout October, a portion of proceeds from the sales of PINKTOBER merchandise and menu items at Hard Rock properties, and online, will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Caron Keating Foundation (hardrock.com/philanthropy).

Throughout October, Las Vegas Premium Outlets South, 7400 Las Vegas Blvd. South, and Las Vegas Premium Outlets North, 875 S. Grand Central Parkway, will have the Premium Outlets Pink Event. For a $10 donation to Susan G. Komen foundation at the on-site Information Center, customers will receive 25 percent off one item at select stores (premiumoutlets.com).
