United Way names new leader

United Way of Southern Nevada on Thursday announced a new chief will lead the agency.

Bob Morgan will assume the role of president and chief executive officer on Oct. 5. He is coming to Southern Nevada from New York.

Morgan was selected from among 76 applicants. He is not interviewing with the media until he begins his job. The nonprofit did not detail his salary on Thursday.

"With an extensive academic background and a successful entrepreneurial, private and nonprofit sector history, Bob Morgan has the necessary experience to drive United Way of Southern Nevada forward as its new President and CEO," Don Gibe, chairman of the search committee, said in the announcement.

Morgan replaces Cass Palmer, who was appointed president and CEO in March 2011. Palmer in February was named director of neighborhood and leisure services for the city of North Las Vegas.

James N. Raffel served as interim president and CEO while the nonprofit conducted a search for Palmer's replacement.

Morgan launched and grew a web technology firm to $1.1 million in revenue. He successfully created over $750 million in new business for one of New York's largest commercial construction firms, according to the nonprofit.

As chief operating officer, Morgan was instrumental in the turnaround and transformation of United Way of Buffalo and Erie County in New York.

United Way of Southern Nevada typically raises more than $11 million every year, which goes back to smaller nonprofits in the community to help improve people's lives.
