Vacant apartment fire causes estimated $100,000 in damage

A fire at a vacant apartment building caused an estimated $100,000 in damage Saturday, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

Fire crews responded at 8:22 a.m. to flames and smoke coming coming from a one-story, eight-unit apartment building at 2401 Sunrise Ave., near Stewart and Eastern avenues, according to fire spokesman Tim Szymanski.

The blaze was quickly brought under control and no one was injured.

Fire investigators believe the building, which was vacant and boarded up, was being used by homeless people, Szymanski said. Mattresses and other materials were found in the apartment.
