The wife of a man slain during a west valley carjacking is accused of holding the man down while her brother killed him with a hatchet early Monday morning, Las Vegas police said.
Maria Hernandez, 32, of Idaho, and her brother, Hector Gutierrez, 22, of California, were arrested and were being booked into the Clark County Detention Center where they face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, police said.
The call to a disturbance near the intersection of Buffalo Drive and Eldora Avenue just south of Sahara Avenue came about 2:30 a.m., police said.
Hernandez and her husband were visiting Las Vegas from Idaho and met with Gutierrez, who is a California resident, police said. An initial investigation determined that Hernandez had asked Gutierrez for help in killing her husband.
Police on Monday morning said that Hernandez and her husband were awaiting assistance for their broken-down 2002 silver Ford Windstar with Idaho license plates, when Gutierrez attacked the man with a hatchet, police said. Detectives suspect that Hernandez held her husband down during the attack.
The man was found dead when first responders got there. He will be identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.
Gutierrez left in the van, which was found about 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of South Eastern Avenue and East Viking Road, about 10 miles east from the slaying, Metro Lt. Troy Barrett said. Before his arrest, he was treated at University Medical Center for a stab wound he suffered during the attack.
Georganne Lee lives nearby and told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Monday that she heard pleading and screaming around 2:30 a.m. and went to her home’s balcony to investigate. She said she saw one person lying on the street and another person that she thought was a woman kneeling next to that person with her arms upraised. After she saw the incident, she called police.
