Woman injured in Sun City Summerlin house fire

An accidental attic fire on Friday morning gutted the kitchen and family room of a duplex in Sun City Summerlin, leaving an estimated $175,000 in damages and an elderly woman with minor smoke-inhalation injuries.

The woman woke to smoke alarms, found her duplex, near Rampart and Lake Mead boulevards, full of smoke and evacuated, she told fire investigators. She returned to the home to retrieve her robe and was covered in soot when she exited. The woman was transported to University Medical Center and was reportedly doing well Friday afternoon.

The fire was detected at 7:09 a.m., according to the Las Vegas Fire Department, which responded to the scene in seven minutes and took half an hour to put out the blaze. No other units in the complex were damaged.

Las Vegas Fire Station 107 is expected to open on the northeast corner of Del Webb Boulevard and Sundial Drive in the late spring or early summer of 2012. The station will reduce response times to the Sun City community, fire officials said.
