68 percent containment reported for Northern Nevada wildfires
RENO — Firefighters have contained a little more than two-thirds of a set of Northern Nevada wildfires that once threatened a Pyramid Lake shoreline town, and continue to burn in nearby canyons and rangeland, according to officials.
About 700 firefighters were due Thursday to continue battling the fires that have now charred more than 93 square miles of scrub brush in the Virginia Mountains, about 40 miles north of Reno. It’s 68 percent contained.
Farther north, firefighters are nearing containment of a 10.25-square-mile fire in a wilderness study area near Poodle Mountain northwest of Gerlach. That’s near where the Burning Man counterculture festival is held.
That fire was 80 percent contained on Wednesday, when a break in windy weather helped firefighters.
No new injuries were reported, and neither fire was threatening structures.
