Californian accused in Reno teen slaying

RENO — An 18-year-old California man has been returned to Nevada to face charges in the July killing of a Reno teenager.

Police said federal marshals arrested Cristian Guerrero-Mena in the San Jose area in August.

Reno police said his name initially was withheld because he was a juvenile at the time of the shooting and hadn’t been formally adjudicated.

Police originally said the 16-year-old killed July 20 at an apartment complex on the city’s southeast side was a victim of a gang attack. But investigators later said they weren’t sure about that.

Guerrero-Mena has been booked on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Washoe District Judge David Hardy appointed Guerrero-Mena a public defender on Wednesday but his arraignment has not yet been set. He was being held in the county jail without bail.
