Officials: Man drowned in Lake Mohave over the weekend

A 37-year-old man drowned in Lake Mohave on Sunday, according to Lake Mead National Recreational Area officials.

The man, who was identified only as a resident of Bullhead City, Ariz., had been swimming at Cabinsite Cove.

Lake Mead’s Interagency Communication Center got a call about 12:40 p.m. Sunday about a man who had disappeared underwater while trying to retrieve a raft that blew away. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Wind gusts reached about 20 mph Sunday, according to Christie Vanover, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service.

A dive class training in the area found the body. He was 40 feet underwater when they brought him to surface and tried to save him.

The National Park Service, Arizona Game and Fish, Nevada Department of Wildfire and Bullhead City Fire Department then responded to the scene. He was taken to a hospital in Arizona where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The victim’s identity and cause of death will be determined by the Mohave County Medical Examiner. The incident is still under investigation.
