A man driving away from police after allegedly stealing auto parts was killed Friday when he drove his pickup through a stop sign and collided with a utility truck a couple of blocks east of North Nellis Boulevard in eastern Las Vegas.
The 33-year-old Las Vegas resident, who has not been identified, had been observed taking parts from a stolen vehicle in an industrial area near Alto Avenue and Bledsoe Lane when he fled in a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe at a high rate of speed, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
At 6:36 p.m., the Tahoe driver failed to stop at the intersection of Alto and Betty Lane and crashed into a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado utility truck, which from the impact was redirected and collided with two unoccupied parked vehicles, a 1940s to 1950s truck and a 1996 Nissan Quest, police reported.
The driver of the Tahoe was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, according to police.
The 28-year-old female passenger in the Tahoe and the 34-year-old male driver of the Silverado, both of Las Vegas, were transported to UMC with moderate injuries.
The death was the 104th traffic fatality within the jurisdiction of police department so far in 2023.
