Nightlife abounds for nocturnals looking to beat the heat

As the sun sets and the temperature drops, Summerlin residents often venture out to enjoy activities after dusk. No matter what their age or interest, residents can find a variety of things to do.

ENTERTAINING THE 21-OR-OLDER SET

Red Rock Resort, 11011 W. Charleston Blvd., offers live entertainment with no cover charge for those 21 or older at Rocks Lounge almost every night. VIP booths provide intimacy while enjoying the evening.

Zowie Bowie, featuring Chris Phillips and Marley Taylor, is scheduled to take the stage Fridays, with doors opening at 10 p.m.

Summerlin resident Eva Fried said she likes to “go to Red Rock all the time to see Zowie Bowie. … The atmosphere was good; the music was good. It seems like an upgraded class of people, which is (indicative) of Summerlin. I always say it’s where ‘the beautiful people’ live.”

Jennifer Weinberg agreed there is a cool night-life vibe in Summerlin.

“We go to the Red Rock … It’s pretty much the place to be,” she said. “Because of the crowd, it’s my age group – 20s, 30s.”

Starting at 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Cherry Nightclub is a dance spot with a disc jockey, without the hassle of going to the Strip. The mix of dance, top 40 and house music goes until 4 a.m.

For more information, call 797-7777 or visit redrock.sclv.com.

The Rampart Casino at The Resort at Summerlin, 221 N. Rampart Blvd., caters to locals with live entertainment with no cover charge Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at J.C. Wooloughan’s Irish Pub. OPTIONS OUTSIDE THE CASINO

Fried said she likes to dance and regularly attends a Friday night social event at VZ Dance Studios, 7207 W. Sahara Ave., No. 130. She said she sometimes brings her 20-something daughters with her.

“We take a lesson, and then after that we have a 2½-hour social night. It’s really nice,” she said.

She called it a good place for “a single lady to find a nice gentleman.”

The social event is from 8:15 to 10:15 p.m. and costs $12 per person. It includes dancing, finger foods and wine. For more information, visit vzbalv.com or call 685-8989.

It’s not just dancing and live entertainment that people gravitate to once the sun goes down. Restaurants, especially those with patio dining such as Kona Grill and Gordon Biersch in Boca Park, are teaming up with patrons who want to socialize.

Vintner Grill, 10100 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 150, hosts a disc jockey starting at 9 p.m. Thursdays. For more information, call 214-5590 or visit vglasvegas.com.

FAMILY FUN IN THE POOL

For families or those not into the singles socializing scene, the JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd., offers a Dive-In Movie Series that screens classic and recently released family movies free for locals at 8:30 p.m. Saturdays through Labor Day weekend. Grab-and-go movie snacks are available for purchase.

Arzu Delp, director of resort experience for the JW Marriott, said the company values its local market.

“We want them to experience the resort,” she said. “We believe that they will spend money when they come to the property in other outlets, in food and beverage, the casino, but we want our local families to be able to come in the pool area and really enjoy the experience. We want them to see what the property has to offer, and this kind of opens the door to that.”

Cheryl Valdez brought her children, Savannah, 15, and Gavin, 6, to see “The Karate Kid” after learning of the locals invitation via an email at work. She said she’d never heard of a hotel opening up its pool to nonguests.

“That kind of caught my attention,” she said. “So I went online, and I saw the pool setup with the waterfall and everything, and it just looked so pretty. And we live just, like, 10 minutes away. We’ve seen the movie before —- most of them we’ve seen before —- but still it’s a nice family outing.”

The remaining schedule is Saturday, “Puss in Boots”; Aug. 25, “Kung Fu Panda 2”; and Sept. 1, “The Lorax.”

Monthly passes are $20 for an individual, $30 for a family pass and $15 for a senior pass.
