Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.

Friday — Region championships at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Boulder City

Region championships in Class 4A, 3A and 2A will be decided on this Nevada Day meet. The Class 4A Desert Region girls race will start things off at 9 a.m., followed by the other three Class 4A races. The small-school races begin at 11:40 a.m.

Thursday — Durango at Sierra Vista, 7 p.m.

The winner of this game will take over second place in the Southwest League and should secure a home playoff game. The Trailblazers made noise by scoring 34 points in a loss to Bishop Gorman on Friday.

Thursday — Arbor View at Palo Verde, 7 p.m.

The Aggies will look to conclude an undefeated run through the Northwest League in this battle of double-wing offenses.

Thursday — Foothill at Green Valley, 7 p.m.

The Falcons will try to bounce back after Liberty handed them their first loss. Green Valley is 1-2 in the Southeast and will need to finish strong to secure a playoff berth.

Thursday — Sunrise Mountain at Cheyenne, 7 p.m.

The Dragons went 1-3 after a strong start, but get a chance to start fresh as the Class 3A playoffs begin.

Tuesday — Mountain and Desert Region first round at host sites, 3 p.m.

Watch for Palo Verde, Cimarron-Memorial, Bonanza, Las Vegas and plenty of others in the Mountain Region.

Tuesday — Mountain and Desert Region first round at host sites, 3 p.m.

Just like the boys, a new region champ will be crowned. Gorman and Green Valley won last year, but are in the Desert Region together. This season Gorman and Coronado will be the teams to watch n the Desert Region. Faith Lutheran and Centennial separated themselves in the Mountain Region, but Shadow Ridge, Arbor View or Palo Verde could disrupt that.

Tuesday — Shadow Ridge at Palo Verde, 6 p.m.

The Panthers put their undefeated Mountain League record on the line against the defending Class 4A state champs.

Wednesday — Coronado at Desert Oasis, 6 p.m.

The Cougars and Diamondbacks begin the week with identical 8-2 records, and the winner should end up with the Desert League’s No. 3 playoff seed.
