VEGAS INVITE: Jackson handles point as Sundevils top Eagles

Denisheun Jackson is still getting used to running Eldorado’s girls basketball team from the point guard spot.

But the sophomore former shooting guard had little trouble Monday.

Jackson had 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals to help the Sundevils rally past Lake Mead, 54-50 in the Vegas Invitational at Mountain View.

“She’s been pretty consistent for us all year,” Eldorado coach Michael Powell said. “She’s a sophomore, and she’s been put into a tough spot. We lost our point guard to injury, our only senior. Now she had to come from the 2-guard to play the point, and she’s learning on the fly. It’s rough.”

The Eagles took a 22-17 halftime lead, sparked by Taylor Badua-Kono’s nine first-half points and Megan Watkins’ six off the bench. Defensively, Lake Mead held the Sundevils to four points in the second quarter and took the momentum into the locker room.

Jackson had seven points during a 19-point third quarter to help Eldorado retake control.

“We’re so young, and we’re just trying to teach them how to play,” Powell said of his team’s sluggish second quarter.

Badua-Kono finished with 21 points and four steals, and Watkins supplied 11 points for the Eagles, but the Sundevils held them in check late in the game. The Lake Mead duo combined for seven points in the fourth quarter.

Johnice Green had 11 points, four rebounds and two steals for Eldorado, which won its first game of the season and advanced to play Churchill County at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“It was huge,” Powell said of the victory. “Our whole team is working hard, and it’s nice to finally get the monkey off our back.”
