Bishop Gorman steamrolls Clark

The way the season is going, it’s unclear when — or if — another Nevada team will score on Bishop Gorman.

On Friday night, Clark became the victim of Bishop Gorman’s third straight shutout, falling 56-0 at home. So far this year, the Gaels have outscored Nevada opponents 177-0.

Bishop Gorman’s offense scored on six straight drives, garnering 411 total yards from scrimmage. For the second game in a row, quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson went 7 for 8 and threw three touchdowns.

“It was good to see us move the ball and finish in the red zone,” Bishop Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez said. “I thought our receivers made some really good catches in the open field. They were really able to make the defenders miss.”

Midway through the first quarter, the Gaels’ Jalen Nailor morphed into a human highlight reel. Within about 90 seconds of game time, Nailor scored three touchdowns. The first two came via 60 and 6-yard receptions from Thompson-Robinson.

“We’ve have been working together ever since freshman year, and all that time together really shows on the field,” Nailor said about his quarterback. “I was really happy with the passing game. We haven’t been throwing it as much lately. But once we do it’s lights out.”

His third touchdown came from a 21-yard interception return. Amod Cianelli and Brevin Jordan also scored on touchdown runs of six and 25 yards, respectively. It was enough for officials to signal for running time at 1:52 in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, Clark (2-4, 1-3 Southwest League) struggled to get positive yardage. Chargers quarterback Justin Aguilar threw a nine-yard completion to Daimanuel Mayfield on his team’s first play from scrimmage. The success was short-lived, however, as Clark failed to gain more than three yards on any other play for the rest of the night.

Aguilar threw three interceptions and was sacked four times. The Gaels held the Chargers to only 27 yards of total offense and one first down, which came off a pass interference penalty in the third quarter.

While some dominant teams may get complacent with a big lead, Bishop Gorman (5-2, 3-0 Southwest Leauge) continued to play with intensity even when its backups entered the game midway through the second quarter.

“We just work at getting better every game,” Nailor said. “Even if we’re not in, we’re cheering on our twos so they can improve.”
