Fountain Valley holds off Gators

Green Valley scored four touchdowns in the final 12:06 and recovered an unusual fumble, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 52-49 to visiting Fountain Valley (Calif.) on Friday.

On its first drive of the fourth quarter, Fountain Valley attempted a 58-yard field goal and missed, igniting the Green Valley rally. Barry Cruvant scored on a 47-yard pass from Jacob Olin and the Gators recovered the subsequent onside kick. Green Valley converted two fourth-down plays before a 4-yard run by Cruvant made it 52-49.

Fountain Valley got the first down it needed to take advantage of Green Valley’s lack of timeouts, but fumbled while attempting to take a knee. Green Valley’s attempt to score ended with a fumble.

Fountain Valley dominated the early going, recovering a fumble on Green Valley’s first play and scoring inside the first two minutes, then forcing a Gators punt and marching 90 yards in 19 plays to make it 14-0.

Green Valley got going in the second quarter with touchdown runs by Aaron Love and Elijah Spann, but a 47-yard field by Derek Huynen late in the third padded Fountain Valley’s lead, and ultimately accounted for the margin of victory.
