Martell propels Gaels to blowout win over Servite

Bishop Gorman quarterback Tate Martell replaced starter Danny Hong to spark the Gaels’ offense, while Russell Booze and Tyjon Lindsey each scored three touchdowns in a 48-27 win Friday over Servite at Cerritos College in Cerritos, Calif.

Martell finished with 233 offensive yards (120 passing and three TDs, 113 rushing), Lindsey hauled in four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt 93 yards for another score and Booze finished with 93 yards on eight carries for the Gaels, who are ranked No. 1 in the country by USA Today.

Prior to Martell entering the game late in the 2nd quarter, the Gaels had just 44 yards of offense, as Hong struggled with just 4 of 9 passing for just 32 yards and an interception.

The Gaels were outgained 275-90 in the first half but outgained Servite 353-238 in the second half.

Servite had its chances in the first half, driving deep into Gorman territory four times − thrice into its red zone − but managed just two field goals.

The Friars got to Gorman’s 2-yard line on their second possession, but the Gaels stopped Travis Waller short for a loss of a yard on 4th and goal to take over.

Servite got the ball back nine plays later when Justin Parcells intercepted Gorman’s Hong at the Friars’ 41-yard line.

But after crossing midfield, the Friars were forced to punt, and that’s when the Gaels drew first blood with Lacey’s punt-return touchdown at the 11:40 mark of the second quarter.
