State preps softball roundup: Gorman earns shot at 2nd straight title

Updated May 18, 2023 - 8:59 pm

Any suspense involved in Thursday’s Class 4A state softball winner’s bracket game lasted just over half an inning.

Bishop Gorman erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back en route to a five-inning 18-5 victory over Silverado at the College of Southern Nevada, earning a berth in Saturday’s state title game.

Brooklyn Hicks led the Gorman attack, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

The Gaels (23-10-1), the defending state champions and the No. 1 seed from the Mountain League, endured a minor scare in the fourth inning when the Skyhawks (20-9), the No. 1 seed from the Desert League, scored four runs to cut the deficit to 10-4. However, Gorman responded with eight runs in the fifth to put the game away.

Samantha Lefever and Sarah Fonseca each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Gaels.

Keira Tibbetts homered and drove in four runs for Silverado.
