BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs top Palo Verde, force three-way tie in Southwest

N.J. Makaiwi had 44 assists and 12 digs, and Cody Heathcock added 14 digs Thursday to help Shadow Ridge’s boys volleyball team force a three-way tie for first place in the Southwest League with a 16-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-23 win at Palo Verde.

A.J. Makaiwi had 34 digs, and Cutler Leavitt had eight kills and 20 digs for the Mustangs.

Michael Simister had nine kills, and Cole Willson dished out 28 assists for the Panthers. Jonathan Hecker added 20 digs for Palo Verde, which won the tiebreaker for the league’s No. 1 seed.

Palo Verde, Legacy and Shadow Ridge all finished 6-2 in league play and went 2-2 in head-to-head meetings. Palo Verde and Legacy each won nine sets in those head-to-head meetings. Shadow Ridge won eight sets.

Because Palo Verde swept the Longhorns, the Panthers earned the No. 1 seed with Legacy as the No. 2 and Shadow Ridge as the No. 3.

Del Sol 3, Chaparral 2 — At Del Sol, La’akea Cabanas had 18 kills, 24 assists, 17 digs, four blocks and three aces as the Dragons rallied for a 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10 win over the Cowboys.

Jared Moreda added 13 kills, 13 digs, eight blocks and four aces, and Andrei Santamaria had 13 digs, three kills and three aces for Del Sol.

Jose Chavez had 16 kills, and Isai Barrios added 14 kills for Chaparral. Jonas Rivas had eight kills and four blocks for the Cowboys.

Cimarron-Memorial 3, Cheyenne 2 — At Cimarron, Dashawn Creswell supplied 14 digs and 11 kills to lead the Spartans to a 25-15, 16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11 win over the Desert Shields.

Cimarron’s Will Baird contributed 41 assists, six digs and five blocks, and teammate Stone Stevenson had 12 digs and 11 kills. Joe Tito added nine blocks for the Spartans.

Tech 3, Desert Pines 1 — At Tech, Josh Wood had 16 kills and 21 assists to lead the Roadrunners to a 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18 win over the Jaguars.

Bryant Pochop had eight kills, eight digs and five aces, and Brian Kaier supplied six kills and five blocks for Tech, which got 18 assists and two digs from Eric Sebastian.

Desert Pines’ Estanislao Lansangan had 20 assists, eight digs, two aces and two kills, and Ortega Wiltz added 11 kills and six digs for the Jaguars.

Valley 3, Silverado 0 — At Valley, Marty Heavey had 17 kills to lead the Vikings to victory over the Skyhawks, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.

Alex Sandoval had seven kills, 36 assists and 12 digs, and teammate Chase Fayeghi had nine kills and two aces for Valley.

Tyler Gralapp had 13 kills and 10 digs to lead Silverado.

Taz Goon had 10 kills and five digs, and teammate Cody Steckel had 27 assists and 10 digs for the Skyhawks.

Legacy 3, Bishop Gorman 0 — At Gorman, Anthony Madden had 12 kills and five digs, and Anthony Delgado added 32 assists and 12 digs to help the Longhorns to a 29-27, 26-24, 25-18 sweep of the Gaels.

Anthony Guevara had seven kills and six digs, and teammate Zaire Franklin added six kills and two aces for Legacy.

Liberty 3, Las Vegas 0 — At Liberty, Brycen Ivester had 27 assists to guide the Patriots to a 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 sweep of the Wildcats.

Ryan Taggert put down 10 kills, and Mike Meatovich added five blocks and four kills for Liberty.

Royce Reyes had 12 assists and Mark Gil Gacutan notched seven kills for Las Vegas, which got seven digs and five kills from Ryan Magante.

Durango 3, Canyon Springs 0 — At Durango, Jaylen Clark had nine kills, 10 aces, and six digs to lead the Trailblazers past the Pioneers, 25-14, 25-15, 25-15.

Michael Diggins had seven kills and two aces for Durango. Andre Shabazz had 28 assists and eight digs, and teammate Marc Viernes had four aces and nine digs for the Trailblazers.

Maurice Hunter had four kills, and Michael Wilson had two kills and two blocks to lead the Pioneers. Edward Cromwell added four assists and three digs for Canyon Springs.
