VOLLEYBALL: Longhorns overcome early deficit, upend Cougars

Tanner Compton recorded 20 kills and 10 digs, and Braden Liu dished out 46 assists as Legacy’s boys volleyball team defeated host Coronado 16-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-20 on Tuesday.

Trent Compton added 12 kills and eight digs, and Jonah Tarlton supplied eight kills for the Longhorns.

Max Osmundson led the defending state champion Cougars with 16 kills and three aces, and teammate Logan Dickover tallied 34 assists, 13 digs and four aces.

Sam Cox had 10 digs, and Travis Boman notched seven kills and two aces for Coronado.

Palo Verde 3, Green Valley 1 — At Green Valley, Andrew Weston posted 32 assists, eight digs and five kills, and Ryan Nielson had 25 digs as the Panthers defeated the Gators, 23-25, 26-24, 25-12, 25-14.

Brigham Clawson added 12 kills and three aces for Palo Verde.

Zachary Hewitt led Green Valley with 12 kills and 10 digs. Kyle Accardy had 13 digs, and Dustin Elliott 12 kills for Gators.

Valley 3, Shadow Ridge 0 — At Shadow Ridge, Alex Sandoval tallied 34 assists, nine digs and two blocks, and Jack Heavey provided 14 kills, four digs and two blocks as the Vikings swept the Mustangs, 25-14, 25-18, 25-20.

Matt Ballaro had nine kills and seven digs, and David Delaney added 18 digs for Valley.

A.J. Makaiwi had 31 digs, and Nathan Makaiwi tallied 23 assists for Shadow Ridge, which also got seven kills from Carter Johnson.

Centennial 3, Silverado 1 — At Centennial, Tanner Polley had 11 kills, and Chet Durkin provided 26 assists and 10 digs to guide the Bulldogs to a 21-25, 25-29, 25-20, 25-17 victory over the Skyhawks.

Tanner Durkin supplied eight kills, and Nyjaee Washington added seven kills for Centennial.

Cody Steckel dished out 28 assists, and Austin Hunt notched 12 kills and 10 digs for Silverado, which also got 10 digs from Travis Houston.

Arbor View 3, Chaparral 1 — At Chaparral, Darien Bradley had 12 kills, two aces and three blocks to help the Aggies to a 25-13, 18-25, 25-16, 25-12 win over the Cowboys.

Chris Heron had 35 assists and two kills, and Sam Buckels added six kills, six blocks and two aces for Arbor View.

Pierce Morgan paced Chaparral with nine kills and six digs. Jesus Botelo had 12 digs and six aces, and Luis Munoz-Cardenas supplied three aces and three digs for the Cowboys.

Cheyenne 3, Canyon Springs 1 — At Cheyenne, Aaron Robinson had 15 digs and 11 aces, and Oscar Monzon tallied 17 assists to help the Desert Shields beat the Pioneers, 25-16, 22-25, 25-11, 25-19.

Deonte Perkins added 13 kills for Cheyenne.

Jared Cabagua notched seven assists and three aces, and Gaspar Gonzalez had five kills for Canyon Springs.

Eldorado 3, Sunrise Mountain 0 — At Sunrise Mountain, Dakota Shults put away 10 kills to lead the Sundevils to a 25-12, 25-10, 25-19 sweep of the Miners.

Jacob Tibbs supplied five aces and four kills, and Jacob Hollingsworth added four kills for Eldorado.

Del Sol 3, Desert Pines 0 — At Del Sol, Jared Moreda had 11 kills, three aces and two digs to help the Dragons to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 sweep of the Jaguars.

Josue Aguirre had six kills and three aces, and Jay Peete added six digs and four aces for Del Sol, which also got 15 assists from Blane Quitog.

Clark 3, Cimarron-Memorial 1 — At Clark, Walt Benda had 13 kills and four aces to help the Chargers to a 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23 win over the Spartans.

Jose Sahagun added four kills and nine assists for Clark, and teammate Walter Regalado dished out 15 assists.

Roy Gonzalez had 10 kills, two digs and a block, and Joshua Montellano notched 18 digs for Cimarron.

All-state teams to be announced in June

All-state teams in all eight spring sports will be released one per day, beginning on June 6 with boys golf.

Desert Region: Freshman Jacob Ceci helps Cougars top Foothill

Ceci put the finishing touches on a 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11 victory over the Falcons with a thunderous kill in the fifth and final set, clinching Coronado’s first region championship since 2013.
