VOLLEYBALL: Sierra Vista boys down Durango, lock up playoff berth

Clyde Balagtas notched 14 kills, and Julius Sison supplied 32 assists as Sierra Vista’s boys volleyball team defeated Durango 25-13, 25-20, 26-24 on Wednesday to clinch a berth in the Sunset Region playoffs.

Tyler Hollings added nine kills for the Mountain Lions, who are alone in fourth place in the Northwest League with two league games remaining.

Pedro Abrego had 14 assists to lead Durango, and teammate Michael Diggins had six kills. Rontraye Rainey had five kills and five blocks, and Paris Estrada chipped in with five aces for the Trailblazers.

Shadow Ridge 3, Arbor View 0 — At Shadow Ridge, Richard Sterling had 17 kills and five blocks to lead the Mustangs to a 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 sweep of the Aggies.

Jalen Makiawi contributed 34 assists, and Quinn Peterson supplied eight kills and six blocks for Shadow Ridge, which is assured of finishing no lower than second in the Northwest League.

Darien Bradley led Arbor View with 10 kills and five digs.

Palo Verde 3, Spring Valley 0 — At Spring Valley, Andrew Weston finished with 27 assists to power the Panthers to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-16 sweep of the Grizzlies in a Northwest League match.

Brigham Clawson put away 12 kills, and Mitchell Tingey posted 11 digs for Palo Verde.

Las Vegas 3, Canyon Springs 0 — At Canyon Springs, Evany Diaz recorded 22 assists, and Blake Burgess added nine kills and three blocks to help the Wildcats sweep the Pioneers 25-13, 25-15, 25-14 in a Northeast League match.

Shayne Marquez had 19 assists, and Evan Kindard had 12 digs for Las Vegas.

Carl Esteban notched 17 assists, Burnadino Faulafo had seven kills, and Immanuel Tufuga added six kills and four digs for Canyon Springs.

Silverado 3, Rancho 0 — At Silverado, Bryan Skworzec had 38 assists, and Curtis Hadland tallied 20 kills as the Skyhawks swept the Rams 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 in a Northeast League match.

Travis Houston added 10 digs for Silverado.

Aaron Robles had 12 assists, and Jef Rebibes supplied six kills and four digs for Rancho.

Valley 3, Green Valley 0 — At Valley, Sean Carter dished out 27 assists to lead the Vikings to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 sweep of the Gators in a Northeast League match.

Matt Ballaro had nine kills and 11 digs, and Jack Heavey added nine kills for Valley.

Arvin Nitollama had 22 assists, Kenan Haywood added 13 kills and Ethan Hunt had nine digs to lead Green Valley.

Western 3, Cheyenne 1 — At Cheyenne, Kaulen Buckley had 13 kills, and Braeden Smith added four kills, 15 assists, four blocks and four aces as the Warriors rallied to beat the Desert Shields 16-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 in a Sunset League match.

Sky Tillmond contributed six kills and three blocks, and Jesus Herrera finished with eight digs, three assists and two aces for Western.

Daniel Gonzalez led Cheyenne with 12 kills and three aces.

Mojave 3, Clark 0 — At Clark, Darryl Miller-Green had 15 kills and five blocks to help the Rattlers sweep the Chargers  25-14, 25-18, 25-17 in a Sunset League match.

Jose Tovar had 31 assists, and Matt Albinio added 10 kills and five aces for Mojave.

All-state teams in all eight spring sports will be released one per day, beginning on June 6 with boys golf.

Desert Region: Freshman Jacob Ceci helps Cougars top Foothill

Ceci put the finishing touches on a 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11 victory over the Falcons with a thunderous kill in the fifth and final set, clinching Coronado’s first region championship since 2013.
