Bail set for man accused of killing woman at stoplight

The man accused of shooting and killing a woman at a stop light in April was granted $500,000 bail this morning.

District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez granted bail to Calvin Kirklin, 21, who was previously being held without the possibility of release from the county jail. However, Kirklin’s attorney, Deputy Public Defender Joe Abood, said Kirklin won’t be able to afford half a million dollars.

Kirklin is accused of shooting 39-year-old Blanca Gonzalez at the intersection of Nellis and Charleston boulevards. She was waiting at a traffic stop in an SUV with her two children.

Kirklin told police he was intoxicated at the time of the shooting and never meant to shoot Gonzalez. He had no prior relationship with the victim.
