cortez elementary school teams
with spread the word nevada

Cortez Elementary School, 4245 E. Tonopah Ave., became the 24th school adopted by Spread the Word Nevada, a nonprofit group started in 2001 that provides monthly book distributions and literacy services to students.

Windsong Trust made a $100,000 donation to the organization for the adoption of Cortez and two other elementary schools to be determined by the end of the year. The contribution was the largest single amount in the program's history.`

Students learn of John Adams' legacy as part of Law Day

Students from Canyon Springs and Eldorado high schools visited the Regional Justice Center, 200 Lewis Ave., to learn about the justice system May 5 and 6 as part of Nevada Law Day. This year's theme was The Legacy of John Adams -- From Boston to Guantanamo.

Students discussed legal principles such as due process of law and its impact on the criminal justice system. Students in classrooms across the state were able to watch the event through video conferencing.

Judges, attorneys and law enforcement representatives also visited elementary and secondary schools to talk about their professions and the careers available in the justice system. For more information, visit

Female veterans to discuss trauma
of war, life after

The second annual UNLV Combat Trauma Conference is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Richard Tam Alumni Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

Female veterans will discuss the emotional trauma of combat during the conference for medical professionals, counselors, legislators and veterans groups. The conference is designed to help professionals understand the problems and develop solutions for issues facing female veterans such as posttraumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, military sexual trauma, homelessness, physical health and family trouble.

Speakers scheduled to appear include retired Brig. Gen. Rebecca Halstead, retired Col. Kim Olson, author of "Iraq and Back"; Elizabeth Gifford of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and U.S. Representatives from across the country. Paradise Elemenary school teacher
receives Presidential Award

Paradise Elementary School teacher Arlene Hayman was recognized with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

She will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony and $10,000 from the National Science Foundation. Hayman was one of 85 teachers honored nationwide.

Marc Kahre Elementary school
honors its namesake

Marc Kahre Elementary School, 7887 W. Gowan Road, honored its namesake this month with its annual parade of officers on the school's Kahre Field. Students also saw demonstrations by the Metropolitan Police Department's K-9 Unit, Mounted Police Patrol and SWAT and heard from guest speakers, including Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie. Kahre was a 15-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department who was killed Oct. 11, 1988, in the line of duty. Kahre Elementary School opened in 1991. Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School
to host cheer camp

Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School plans to host a cheer camp from 9 a.m. to noon June 13-16 at the school's gym, 2015 S. Hualapai Way. The camp is $85 for girls entering second through sixth grades. Girls will be taught in their own age groups. The camp will be taught by varsity cheerleaders and chaperoned by cheer coaches. Students receive $740,000
in scholarships at annual luncheon

The Public Education Foundation awarded nearly $740,000 worth of scholarships to more than 320 Clark County high school seniors this month at the 12th annual Scholarship Recognition Luncheon. The scholarships are provided by community businesses, nonprofit groups and individuals, and range from $500 to $40,000. The foundation has awarded scholarships to more than 2,700 students since 1994, totaling nearly $7 million.

TO PROSPECTIVE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS

The Medical Skills for Life Institute is offering 10 $2,000 scholarships and 10 $500 tuition grants to the first 20 students who are enrolled and accepted to the institute through Sept 1. These scholarships are for people looking to become medical assistants or phlebotomists.

Public Education Foundation plans charity golf tournament

The Public Education Foundation's 11th annual Tee Up for Kids Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled for
7:30 a.m. June 2 at Spanish Trail Country Club, 5050 Spanish Trail Lane.

Playing spots are available for $300 and foursomes for $1,200, with proceeds going to Nevada public schools through the foundation's various programs.

Tournament activities will include hole-in-one and closest-to-the-pin contests, tee prizes, trophies and an awards luncheon.

Nevada Homeschool Expo
coming in June

The third annual Nevada Homeschool Expo is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 11 at Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 Lindell Road.

The expo will include information on curriculum, workshops, guest speakers, exhibits and live demonstrations.

Teachers can seek funding online
for class projects

Local school teachers can apply for donations for classroom projects through donorschoose.org.

The nonprofit website, founded in 2000, allows public school teachers to describe specific educational projects for students, and donors choose the projects they want to support. More than 160,000 teachers have secured more than $71 million worth of books, art supplies and technology resources.

Locally, more than 150 teachers have used the website to secure more than $119,000 in funding. Teacher Leanna Kromer from O'Callaghan Middle School, 1450 Radwick Drive, has funded eight classroom projects totaling more than $2,000 since January.

World Heritage Student Exchange
seeks host families

The World Heritage Student Exchange program is seeking host families in the Las Vegas Valley for high school boys and girls.

Couples, single parents and families with or without children are welcome to apply. Students can be hosted for a semester or for a school year.

Exchange students are available from Spain, Germany, China, Norway, Russia, France, Italy, Sweden and more.
