FAITH LUTHERAN TO HOST HOLIDAY SALE

Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School, 2015 S. Hualapai Way, plans to host its Crusader Christmas Boutique sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 1. The event will feature more than 50 local vendors selling baked goods, jewelry, clothing, home goods, skin and beauty products and more. All proceeds will benefit Faith Lutheran's 2013 Grad Nite Live event for seniors.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY FOUNDATION OFFERS FREE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP WORKSHOP

The Cultural Diversity Foundation has a free college scholarship workshop scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at its office, 500 N. Rainbow Blvd., Suite 300. The workshop will explain how to search for scholarships, apply for merit scholarship awards, write scholarship essays and complete the Free Application For Student Aid, or FAFSA. Seating is limited. EXCHANGE STUDENT PROGRAM SEEKS LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES

World Heritage, a nonprofit student exchange program, is seeking volunteers to serve as area representatives. World Heritage offers qualified students from around the world between 15 and 18 the opportunity to spend a high school semester in the United States with a host family. Area representatives recruit and screen potential host families, supervise the exchange students in the community, organize activities with the students throughout the year and provide support to host families, students and schools.

CHURCH PLANS GRANT-WRITING SEMINAR

BIG LOTS DONATES $2,500 TO ALLEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Allen Elementary School, 8680 W. Hammer Lane, was scheduled to receive a $2,500 donation from Big Lots during the bargain-item retailer's grand opening event Nov. 16. Principal Gary Prince was to accept the donation from Big Lots district manager David Nielsen.

The new Big Lots store is at 7781 W. Tropical Parkway.

ARBOR VIEW HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAM TO HOST FUNDRAISERS

Arbor View High School, 7500 Whispering Sands Drive, plans to host its fourth annual holiday baseball camp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 1 on the baseball field. Registration is set for 8 a.m. The camp is open to kids 8 to 14 and is $50 per player. Players are asked to bring water and lunch. High school coaches and players will teach the camp.

STUDENTS KICK OFF READING COMPETITION AT UNLV

Nearly 7,000 fourth- and fifth-graders from 37 schools were scheduled to visit the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center Nov. 14 for the launch of the Rebel Reading Challenge. The second annual reading program is a 30-day competition meant to motivate students to read. Winning classes receive tickets and transportation to a UNLV men's basketball home game and a pizza party.

The program is sponsored by SuperPawn, UNLV Athletics and the Clark County School District. Spread the Word Nevada, a nonprofit organization that donates books to students in low-income schools, provided each student with a book.

POLAR SHADES DONATES SUPPLIES TO HINMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Hinman Elementary School, 450 E. Merlayne Drive, received a donation of Pop-Tarts and bottled water for emergency preparedness kits and more than $500 in school supplies from Polar Shades, a Henderson-based retractable sun shade manufacturer. Polar Shades employees delivered the school supplies Nov. 6, which included pens, books, binders and paper. The emergency supplies kits are for children in case of a natural disaster.

FREE AFTER-SCHOOL MEALS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS

The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas will provide free after-school meals to students 18 or younger at 13 locations across the valley as part of the Child and Adult Care Food Program. The program is federally funded and administered by the Nevada Department of Education. The program provided 900 meals a day to 14 sites last year.

Meals are available Monday through Friday, and no registration is required. For more information, call 702-924-2102.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada is recruiting adult mentors for students needing positive role models. The nonprofit organization has operated in the valley for 39 years and supports more than 400 mentorships this school year.
