Fire in family court restroom was arson, investigators say

A small fire in a Clark County Family Court restroom Monday was arson, the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

Three marshals used portable extinguishers to put out the blaze at the courthouse, 601 N. Pecos Road, near Bonanza Road. They were treated for minor smoke inhalation and released.

Damage was estimated at $1,000.

No arrests had been made in the incident as of Monday night.

It was the Fire Department's second arson investigation on consecutive days. About 7:23 a.m. Sunday, the Community Counseling Center, 1120 Almond Tree Lane, near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway, was torched. Three offices, the attic and the roof sustained substantial damage.

Las Vegas police officers saw the smoke and reported it. When firefighters arrived, the building was locked and they had to force their way in.

Fire investigators said the blaze was intentionally set and caused $100,000 in damage. It was still under investigation Monday.

Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said it does not appear the courthouse arson is related to Sunday's arson.

Anyone with information on the fires can call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
