Firefighter Matt Peek called hero in Truckee River rescue

RENO -- Matt Peek is a member of the Fire Department's Water Entry Team credited with saving the lives of two people trapped in the Truckee River last June.

Authorities say swift, intense river conditions pinned several people against debris, making it impossible for two of them to escape. They say Peek's training and decisive action were instrumental in the rescue.

He's being honored with the 2011 Higgins & Langley Swiftwater Rescue Incident Award.

Officials for the National Association for Search and Rescue, which held its annual conference in Sparks this weekend, said the award is one of the most prestigious international awards of its kind.
