A garage fire in the northwest valley Sunday evening displaced a family of three and caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.
The fire broke out in the engine compartment of a custom car two people were working on in the garage of a home at 9824 Fast Elk Street, near Fort Apache and Moccasin roads.
Authorities said the two people tried putting out the fire with a garden hose but were unsuccessful.
The blaze gutted the garage and caused moderate to heavy damage throughout the home, according to the Fire Department. The custom car was destroyed.
It was the second fire to break out in a garage over the weekend, according to the Fire Department. On Saturday a blaze destroyed several motorcycles, including a collector’s bike worth more than $100,000.
Authorities said if the owners in both cases had working fire extinguishers, they probably would have been able to put out the fires and save their property.
