Haitian relief: Mobile giving passes $16 million

Donations made via mobile phones to organizations helping in the relief efforts in Haiti zoomed past the $16 million over the weekend as several groups have added short codes to enable text message giving in the U.S. and Canada.

The Mobile Giving Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping other non-profits raise funds through mobile contributions said donations grew from $10 millon on Friday to more than $16 million by late Sunday morning. They plan to report new numbers later today.

Groups added to the MGF include the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Habitat for Humanity, National Religious Broadcasters, Oxfam, Save the Children Foundation, UNICEF, World Vision and others.

Donating is done by texting a keyword to a designated short code via a mobile phone. A micro-donation of $5 or $10 can be made to aid the millions of people affected by this tragedy, and 100 percent of the donation goes to the recipient charity. The donation appears as a charge on your carrier bill, standard rates may apply.
