The Henderson City Council awarded a $170,000 contract Tuesday for the construction of a pedestrian bridge near the intersection of Galleria Drive and Stephanie Street.
City staff proposed the bridge in response to area residents who have long requested pedestrian access over a flood control channel that runs along Stephanie Street.
“That wash has been a natural obstruction for years that has separated the neighborhoods and the residents on the west side from the vibrant amenities on the east side,” project engineer Scott Jarvis said last week.
Those amenities include the Galleria at Sunset mall.
Jarvis, the city’s bicycle program manager, said the bridge also will allow pedestrians and bicyclists from the east side to access the new Whitney Mesa Recreation Area at 1661 Galleria Drive.
He said the bridge, which will be 12 feet wide, will have high side walls and a paved deck surface.
The construction contract was awarded to Aggregate Industries SWR Inc. of North Las Vegas.
Jarvis said the bridge should be completed by the end of the year. The project also includes related landscaping and trail improvements adjacent to the bridge.
