Talk about good things coming in bunches! This morning I picked up the new Droid X smart phone at a local Verizon Wireless office to try for a month. So far, so good, but more on that in a minute.
My son me called at about 2:45 p.m. today to say that a package had arrived at the house. I had him open it, and to my surprise, my new iPhone 4 was nestled inside. Last time I checked the shipping website, the device was still waiting to be picked up. I feel a bit like the Navin R. Johnson character Steve Martin played in the 1979 movie, "The Jerk," who shouted: "The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here!" after the phone book was delivered to his doorstep. Just drop the "book" part and add an "s" to “phone.”
Back to the Droid X. It’s significantly lighter than the original Droid, but still feels very solid in my hand. And though the original model had a slide-down, horizontal keypad, this one doesn’t. It’s the touch screen or nothing if you want to type.
I also noticed the longer design and thicker body near the top edge on the back side of the phone; it’s where the camera and flash are. The back of the camera is also slightly rubberized, making it less likely to slip on smooth surfaces. It’s a very nice touch.
Also, the Droid X’s screen is much larger than my iPhone 3G, coming in at 4.3-inches diagonally. It also has multitouch, which the original Droid lacked. With multitouch lets users expand or shrink text and images by "grabbing" them with forefinger and thumb.
I’m heading home now to make the switch from old iPhone 3G to new iPhone 4. I’ll give you a side-by-side review in a couple of weeks.
