Utah governor delays signing water-sharing agreement
Gov. Gary Herbert has delayed signing a water-sharing agreement between Utah and Nevada for Snake Valley.
A spokeswoman said the governor still hopes to sign an agreement, but first wants to address concerns raised by the Millard County Commission and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon. They sent letters last week to Herbert asking for a delay pending more scientific study on how much water the aquifer contains and how pumping it to Las Vegas would affect the Snake Valley and Wasatch Front environments.
Herbert had appeared ready to sign the agreement earlier in the week.
The deal would split the water from an aquifer that straddles the two states. It also would delay until 2019 a proposal by the Southern Nevada Water Authority to pump water from it.

Gunmen ambush Anchorage, Alaska, police officer
An Anchorage, Alaska, police officer was ambushed by gunmen Saturday as he sat in his patrol car working on an apparently unrelated assault case.
The officer, who is expected to recover, was parked in his cruiser in a residential neighborhood near downtown after taking a domestic violence report on an incident that had occurred in the past. Anchorage patrol officers generally work alone.
Several men pulled up next to the driver’s side in a dark-colored sedan shortly before 2 a.m. and the front passenger fired some rounds.
The officer was struck possibly five times in both arms and his torso, police Lt. Dave Koch said. The officer was able to radio in a description of the fleeing vehicle, which is believed to be a late 1980s to mid 1990s model, probably a Chevrolet.
Police said none of the men in the car said anything and their motive is unknown.
