NORTH LAS VEGAS COUNCIL

Second candidate joins race for Ward 1 seat

A second candidate has joined the race for North Las Vegas City Council Ward 1. Jeffrey A. Eggeman, an eight-year resident of the city, filed his candidacy on Friday.

Rolando Cruz filed for the seat earlier this week.

North Las City Councilman Robert Eliason currently holds the Ward 1 seat and is expected to seek a third term.

Eggeman was the only candidate in the Las Vegas Valley to file on Friday for the upcoming municipal elections.

Filing opened Tuesday and closes Feb. 6. The primary will be April 7, with the general election June 2.

BUDGET CRISIS

Governor, lawmakers rate low in new poll

More than two-thirds of Nevada voters surveyed disapprove of the job Gov. Jim Gibbons is doing and only a quarter trust him to pull the state out of its current budget crisis, a new poll shows.

State lawmakers don't fare much better. Only a third of voters trust the Legislature to solve the budget crisis, according to the poll conducted for the Reno Gazette-Journal and Channel 2 News.

The Jan. 25-27 poll of 600 likely voters found 69 percent disapprove of the governor's performance, with 25 percent approving. The disapproval rating is slightly higher than in an October poll that showed him at 66 percent.

The poll by Maryland-based Research 2000 has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
