81-year-old Reno man dies in police vehicle
An 81-year-old Reno man died early Sunday after he was taken into civil protective custody on suspicion of being too intoxicated to care for himself, officers said.
The man was placed in a police vehicle for transport to the Washoe County Jail after being picked up about 2:30 a.m. at a downtown Reno casino, investigators said.
After going to another location to pick up a suspect, officers noticed the man was unconscious and not breathing. He had been alone in the back of the vehicle.
The man then was taken by ambulance to a Reno hospital, where he died, police said.
Deaths of six sea lions prompt investigation
Authorities are investigating the deaths of six sea lions on the Columbia River. At least some of them appear to have been shot.
The carcasses of four California sea lions and two Steller sea lions were found Sunday about noon.
The discovery in Oregon comes a day after three elephant seals were found shot to death at a breeding ground in central California.
All three species are federally protected. But Oregon and Washington state are trapping some California sea lions to keep them from eating salmon at the Bonneville Dam.

Officials: Baby sitter saves girl from coyote
A nanny pulled a 2-year-old girl from the jaws of a coyote Friday when the animal attacked the toddler and tried to carry her away in its mouth, officials said.
The girl was playing in a sandbox at Alterra Park in Chino Hills in San Bernardino County, Calif. About 10:30 a.m., the caretaker heard screaming. The baby sitter grabbed the child and pulled her from the coyote’s grasp, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.
The child suffered wounds to her buttocks and was taken to a medical center and later was released. She then was taken to another center for a rabies vaccine.
