Blaze near Calico Basin quickly contained

A wildfire erupted Tuesday afternoon near Calico Basin within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, authorities said.

Firefighters with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service quickly were able to contain the Red Springs Fire, which started on private land, said BLM spokeswoman Kirsten Cannon.

The fire was first reported about 2 p.m. and grew to about six acres.

Mop-up efforts were expected to continue into the evening, Cannon said.

Calico Basin is located about two miles east of the Red Rock Canyon 13-Mile Scenic Drive entrance on Highway 159.

Marshal in city vehicle runs over man at park

A Las Vegas City marshal on Monday afternoon ran over a man while driving a city vehicle in Jaycee Park, authorities said.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s traffic unit is continuing to investigate the incident in the park at St. Louis and Eastern avenues, said spokesman Bill Cassell. Police were called to the park at 2:45 p.m. with reports that a man had been struck by the marshal’s vehicle, Cassell said.

The man was taken to University Medical Center. His condition was unavailable Tuesday.

The city released this statement regarding the incident: “At times, city vehicles travel through parks for maintenance, special events and public safety purposes. In light of the incident the city is evaluating current policies and practices.”

Authorities withheld the names of those involved.
