Injured LV officer still is in hospital

Las Vegas police released few details on Friday into the previous day’s standoff that resulted in a patrol officer being shot in the leg.

The officer, a 10-year veteran of the department whose name was not released, was recovering at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center on Friday afternoon.

The Clark County coroner’s office refused to release the name of the suspect who was killed during the incident, pending notification of the suspect’s next of kin.

Police responded to a call of shots fired at the Penthouse Club on Russell Road near Interstate 15 at 6:55 a.m. Thursday. Police initially believed that there were two people inside the black Hummer H3 that was seen fleeing the scene.

That turned out to be false, they said Friday.

A patrol officer spotted the Hummer near Russell Road and Rainbow Boulevard and pursued it until it flipped over in a desert area near Durango High School, near Rainbow and Hacienda Avenue.

As the officer approached the vehicle, which was resting on the passenger side, the man inside opened the driver’s side door, stood up and fired several shots, striking the officer in the right leg. The officer returned fire, and the man went back inside the vehicle.

The man later died as SWAT officers engaged in a standoff with him. Police would not say Friday whether the suspect died from being shot by the officer.
