The Metropolitan Police Department announced Friday it was one of 14 agencies awarded "Accreditation with Excellence" honors by a national accrediting body.
Las Vegas police have been recognized by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement since 1989. Nearly 600 departments nationwide have been accredited by the organization, including the Henderson Police Department, which earned its latest reaccreditation in March.
A department press release said the organization looks at several categories, including whether an agency is forward-thinking, addresses crime problems before they occur, uses the best hiring practices and police tactics, and routinely does self-assessments.
The department is reaccredited every three years. This is the first year of the organization’s "with Excellence" honors.
