Man hospitalized after officer-involved shooting

A man whose roommate called police after he threatened to kill himself Monday night was shot after reaching for a shotgun in front of responding officers, Las Vegas police said.

Capt. Csaba Maczala said police received a call at 9:30 p.m. from the roommate. When officers arrived at the home in the 3200 block of University Avenue, near Harmon Avenue and Pecos Road, they met the roommate outside and ordered the man to leave the building. The man came out carrying a shotgun.

Officers were able to talk the man into lowering the weapon and placing himself on the ground. But when officers went to restrain him, he grabbed for the shotgun, Maczala said. The officers felt threatened and fired on the man, hitting him in the lower body. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening, according to police.

Information on how many officers fired their weapons was not released Monday night. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. Their names will be released by the Metropolitan Police Department after 48 hours.
