A man was shot and killed by Las Vegas police officers downtown early this morning.
Department spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said an officer stopped the man for jaywalking at 11th and Fremont streets at about 4:40 a.m.
The officer saw the man had a gun at his side and issued verbal commands that the man wasn’t following, Morgan said.
She said the man’s gun appeared to be a black semi-automatic weapon. The officer called for backup.
For about 10 to 15 minutes, officers continued issuing commands to the man until he got into a kneeling position to fire at the officers, Morgan said.
Officers then opened fire, shooting and killing the man. Morgan said at least one officer fired his weapon.
The name and age of the man has not been released. The names of the officers will be released in 48 hours, per department policy.
