Ely man killed while taking pictures at rock racing event

A spectator was killed while taking photographs of a vehicle rock racing event Saturday afternoon in the Black Ridge area of San Juan County.

Christopher Hower, 30, of Ely, Nevada, was struck and killed by a 4X4 rock racing vehicle around 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

According to San Juan County Sheriff Rick Eldredge, Hower was taking photos of the rock racing competition, a private event held each year by the owners of the property on which it takes place. Police said Hower was shooting from an unauthorized area of the track when a 4X4 vehicle came off of a jump in the course, killing him.

Contact has been made with the victim’s next of kin.
