ST. GEORGE, Utah — Authorities say a Utah teenager told police he tried to blow up a homemade explosive device in his backpack at school because he’d been looking at Islamic State propaganda and wanted to cause fear.
The Spectrum newspaper in St. George reports prosecutors showed video Monday of the 16-year-old talking to police after the smoking but inert backpack was found at the school in March.
It shows the teen saying he wouldn’t care if anyone got hurt because he sees death as a new way of life.
Prosecutors want to try him as an adult on attempted murder and other charges. Attorney Steven Harris says a psychologist will testify in the boy’s defense.
The teen is also accused of cutting up an American flag and spray-painting words including “ISIS” on a wall at a different nearby high school.
