Nevada man charged in ’95 killing of Calif. roommate

A 70-year-old Las Vegas man has been extradited to Southern California to face a felony count of murder in the 1995 killing of a roommate.

Orange County prosecutors in Santa Ana, Calif., said Raymundo Gutierrez Pereda appeared in court Thursday. A judge postponed his arraignment until Nov. 18.

Prosecutors allege that in November 1995, Pereda told 53-year-old roommate Mary Ann O'Neil he was moving to Utah, but he returned shortly afterward and killed her in her house in Placentia, putting her body in the trunk of her car and leaving it in a parking lot.

The case was reopened earlier this year, and an FBI database produced a fingerprint match for Pereda, living in Las Vegas under the name Castro.
