NLV judges to have law degrees, be full time

North Las Vegas municipal judge candidates now must have law degrees and make judgeships their full-time jobs upon election.

A ballot question addressing both issues passed overwhelmingly on Election Day.

Previously, judges in the city were neither required to have law degrees nor to make the judgeships full time.

The item's passage will affect only new judges.

One of the city's current two municipal judges has a law degree; the other does not.

Judge Warren Van Landschoot, before becoming a judge, spent nearly three decades with the North Las Vegas Police Department, where he worked as a police officer and detective.

Judge Sean Hoeffgen graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1996.

Both men already make the judgeships their full-time jobs.
