Officers think woman fell into ravine, died of exposure to cold

Sheriff’s deputies think a woman died of exposure to cold weather after her truck became stuck on a dirt road near Elko and she tried to walk back to town.

Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts says a preliminary investigation shows the woman fell down a ravine as she tried to walk out after her truck became stuck Friday night.

He told the Elko Daily Free Press that deputies think she got up and walked a bit more before lying down and dying of exposure.

A group of outdoor enthusiasts found her body Saturday morning.

The Elko-area woman’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Pitts says deputies continue to investigate the death but think it’s an accident at this time.
