Old military weapons found in shed

For the second day in a row, a person cleaning out a shed called police after finding old military weapons.

A person on Monday found them about 6:30 p.m. in a shed behind their home on the 4300 block of Sunrise Avenue, near Lamb Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

The three items appeared to be old hand grenades. Authorities at Nellis Air Force Base responded and took them from the home. Two or three nearby homes were evacuated, Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

On Sunday a woman cleaning out her backyard shed near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Washington Avenue found some “really old” souvenirs which turned out to be mortar rounds.

Szymanski said it’s not uncommon for people to find old wartime souvenirs when cleaning out loved ones’ sheds or lockers. He encourages people who come across the items to call authorities before handling them.
