Police officer fires shot at two men who struggled with woman in car

A Las Vegas police officer fired his weapon toward two men Saturday afternoon, but no one was injured.

Lt. Lew Roberts said police responded about 3 p.m. to the 2100 block of Las Verdes Street, near Sahara Avenue and Valley View Boulevard, to what was believed at the time to be a kidnapping.

Roberts said two men were struggling with a woman in an attempt to get her into a sport utility vehicle.

When an officer arrived, the woman had broken away from the men and was a “safe distance” from them. The men were inside the vehicle when the officer ordered them to put up their hands. Roberts said one man did not comply, and the officer fired his weapon, missing the car.

“One of the suspects reached toward the floorboard and then raised his hand rather quickly,” Roberts said.

Roberts said the two men were detained. The woman was unharmed, Roberts said.

“There will be an arrest made in this case,” he said.

Roberts said after an initial investigation officials determined the incident was not a kidnapping, but a case of domestic violence.

Roberts said police initially had not located any weapons, but had yet to search the vehicle, which required a search warrant.

He said the officer’s round struck a residence across the street, but did not injure anyone.

Neither the names of the two men nor the woman were released. The officer was placed on paid administrative leave.

His identity will be released 48 hours after the incident per department policy.
