Officials aim for more rentals for Southern Nevada homeless

Southern Nevada landlords with a soft heart and units to fill are in luck.

On Monday, Clark County will host an all-day workshop about landlords getting paid to rent to the area’s homeless.

“If (rental property owners) have two units they’ll commit to the program we will pay to take those two units off the market,” said Brooke Page, the county’s assistant manager for social services.

The supportive housing program is funded by grant money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Homeless people in the program receive intensive case management services from the county, Page said.

“We are not just paying for their rent and walking away,” she said. “We are developing case plans to work with folks in housing so we can ensure their success.”

More than 2,900 rental units inside the county were in the program as of January, Page said. She hopes to add as many as 50 units after Monday’s conference.

The conference is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the ballroom at Palace Station, 2411 W. Sahara Ave. There will be multiple sessions covering a range of topics, including one where landlords renting to the homeless will share their experiences with the program.
