Pregnant woman dies after driving her vehicle into the Colorado River

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. -- A pregnant woman drowned after driving her car into the Colorado River on Thursday morning.

Gabriela Clarice Montijo, 21, of Bullhead City, drove a 2005 Chevrolet Impala into the river near a boat launch ramp on Trane Road about 8:40 a.m., according to Bullhead City Police spokeswoman Emily Montague.

The car was submerged in 15 feet of water. Releases from Davis Dam were reduced to lower the river level to aid the rescue effort, Montague said.

Divers pulled Montijo, who was eight months' pregnant, from the car but she was pronounced dead at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center.

Family members told police that Montijo had a history of seizures and that a medical event might explain how the car entered the river.
